Cadet and Junior State Features Match Up of Champs
Wrestlers from across the state made their way to the 2008 USAW Idaho State Wrestling Championships,
April 11-12 at Capital High School in Boise.
While a few weight classes may have been lacking for quantity, they certainly were not lacking for
quality, such was the case in the Junior, 119-pound bracket. While only four competitors were present, three of them have
won at least one high school state title (Braden Mowry, CDA; Kyle Johnshoy, Melba; and Holden Packard, Mountain View).
The fourth competitor in the bracket was Snake River's two-time state placer Jonathon Turpin. Emerging in
this King-of-the-Hill bracket was Mowry, The defending state champ secured a 6-0, 3-2 decision over Johnshoy,
with Packard and Turpin finishing third and fourth respectively.
The upset of the tournament came in the Cadet, 119-pound bracket where South Fremont's Brock
Banta secured the fall over Lewiston's Casey George. The Bengal freshman, who mauled
his way to the 5A state title and recently collected gold at Northwest Regionals, posted a first round technical fall. Late
in the the second period, however, Banta, the 3A state runner up, scored the knock out punch with a fall
at 1:31.
